The Uttar Pradesh Government’s latest notification dated 19 November 2025 has substantially reduced stamp duty on lease deeds, offering major relief to both landlords and tenants. Earlier, high stamp duty discouraged people from registering rent agreements, often leading to informal arrangements and avoidable disputes.
With the new, significantly lower stamp duty slabs for leases up to 10 years and an annual rent of up to ₹10 lakh, documentation has become far more affordable. This move is expected to encourage wider legal compliance, increase transparency, and reduce conflicts between parties.
A professionally drafted and registered rent agreement clearly defines the rights and obligations of both sides, ensuring protection and preventing misunderstandings. By making registration economical, the government has taken an important step toward promoting secure, dispute-free tenancy practices across the state.
In addition, an agreement to sell must be drafted meticulously, clearly outlining the terms between the parties. Mere crossing of the timeline mentioned in the agreement does not make it obsolete; specific and precisely defined terms must be included to address such situations.
